Summer solstice begins the dread
of shrinking days. Notwithstanding silence
after a snowfall and the silhouette
of the leafless oak against sky at dusk.
Consolations for endurance.

What can it mean:
"And the word was made flesh"?
A promise kept? a reason for hope.
Something is real.

We are all shabby stables, undeserving
caves of darkness, graced
by a Sun that quickens
our desire to reach for the Light.

In a darkened church we hold candles,
each one lit in turn. We raise
our voices. Silent Night. Holy Night.
Believe the Good News:
Light is here.
