Introduction

The public has come to expect medical "miracles" that offer new cures and treatments. There have been a steady stream of significant scientific advances in the field of biomedical engineering. The forefront of research holds extremely exciting promise on many areas. As the consumer revolution grows and public involvement in medical decisions increase, the communication of scientific information takes on an even greater importance than in the past.

Consumers want state-of-the-art information and depend on the media to provide it. It is critically important that the information is scientifically accurate and understandable and is accompanied by realistic assessment of the promise and the limitations of the new technologies, the costs, the ethical considerations, and other public policy concerns.

The Medical Technology Leadership Forum (MTLF) is going to the University of Minnesota to raise these issues on October 19/20, 1998. The University of Minnesota is the home to a thriving center of research and development and a concentration of research institutions and manufacturers who are on the cutting edge of biomedical innovation. MTLF seeks to explore the interface between science and the public, focusing on how leaders in the media see their role in communicating these advances. MTLF intends to bring together the best and the brightest in various media outlets.
