In 10th grade i was emphatically in love with my Biology teacher (oddly enough i was dating his son) and by Valentines Day, i decided i just couldnt keep my love a secret any longer...SO I cut out a full page picture from my moms Victorias Secret catalog and cut out the face of the sexy model in the sexy lingerie; and i put a picture of MY FACE on the picture and then i glues it to a very gawdy card that i had made out of lots of glitter and hearts and stars...needless to say it made him blush, but then he did smile really big, so i was totally satisfied!!!!!!!

I was a freshman in high school and totally in infatuated with a junior who played football with my brother. He would give my brother a ride back and forth everyday to practice. One day I decided that I would sit outside and wait for him to bring my brother home so I could talk to him. I got all dressed up and sat out on the picnic bench, watering the grass. I burnt the tops of my feet so bad and couldn't wear shoes for days. We ended up going out for 5 years after that.

Last year, the day before Valentines Day, I snuck into my husbands office after he left for the day. I had about a dozen handmade Valentines professing my undying love to him (even after almost 13 years of marriage). I stashed them all over his cubicle. He was finding love notes till noon on Valentines Day! It was really fun! And his coworkers really got a laugh out of it as well.

Before my wife and I were married, we celebrated her birthday by attending the "Good Evening" live radio show at the old World Theater. Before the event, I sent in a romantic poem that I hoped would be read on the air. Michael Johnson, no slouch of a romantic himself, was the host. Among the many greettings he recited that night was this from the soon-to-be-a-groom seated in the audience, "Happy Birthday to Anne J, in Row J, from Ted just one seat away, which is where I will always be, if you agree, to marry me." Michael was impressed. So was half the audience. The other half was straining shoulders and necks to peer into Row J to learn the identify of the author. He was easy to spot. He was beaming ear-to-ear, next to his future wife, cheeks red and wet with tears, simultaneously embarrassed and touched by the moment. Michael immediately broke into "I Will Whisper Your Name." It wasn't foolish, but it was my minute in the romance hall-of-fame.

My husband used to travel extensively for his job before we were married. One time, after we'd been dating for a couple of years, he'd been out in New York for a week or two straight, and was going to be out there for yet another week. We had talked on Friday morning and were missing each other, but decided it didn't make any sense for him to make a quick trip home just for the weekend only to have to be out there again on Monday morning.

After hanging up with him, I made the spur-of-the-moment decision to try to get a flight out there and surprise him. I quickly made flight arrangements to Newark and called some friends living in New Jersey. I flew out Saturday morning, my friends picked me up at the airport, and drove me to upstate New York. By the time we arrived at his hotel, it was already late afternoon. I called his room, and rather than being surprised, he simply wondered what had taken me so long to get there! He said that as soon as we'd hung up the phone on Friday, he'd "known" that I would be coming.

As a Sophomore in High School I was infatuated with a guy in our school band. He was also a swimmer and had broad, strong shoulders. Anyway, I figured out that if I'd read the poetry he'd written, he'd spend time with me. I often went out to lunch with him to read his poetry.

Eventually, I started a poetry and literature club that met after school. I was the president of the club, and this guy would actually come to the club.

We never dated, but I got to read lots of his poetry. Whooppee!

It was 1969, I was living in Dinkytown, going to the U of M on and off, and dating a beautiful boy who was 19, I was 21 so this was somewhat scandalous or so I thought.

He asked me to meet him at 12 midnight in the middle of the railroad bridge across Mississippi River off River Road, he was coming from the St.Paul side I was coming from the Minneapolis side.

Well, I started across the bridge at the preordained time but when I got to the middle no boy! I kept going in light of the fact that a train could have come at anytime and there he was at the other end, late but there. Everytime I drive past that bridge I marvel at the folly of youth and love!
Mary Tramel, Minneapolis, MN
