The Current Fakebook Series Welcomes Author and Rock 'N' Roll Photographer Bob Gruen on April 15

March 7, 2009

WHAT: The Current welcomes rock 'n' roll photographer and author Bob Gruen for this installment of The Current Fakebook® series. Host Mary Lucia will unpack Gruen's wealth of personal experiences and uncanny memory to create a singular event. The Current's Bill DeVille will provide the DJ soundtrack for the evening.

NOTE: A sampling of Bob Gruen's photos are available for publication upon request.

Gruen is one of the best known and respected documenters of the music scene. His pictures are iconic: John Lennon in front of the Statue of Liberty, holding the peace sign; Bob Dylan going electric at the Newport music festival; the Ramones outside of CBGBs. Gruen specializes in candid, behind-the-scenes photos of stars like Muddy Waters, Rolling Stones, Madonna and Johnny Rotten. Gruen is also known as the most important photographer to document the punk, proto-punk and new wave scenes of America and England, capturing such artists like the New York Dolls, the Clash, the Ramones, Patti Smith and Blondie.

His books include "John Lennon: The New York Years," "The Sex Pistols: Chaos," "The Clash" and "New York Dolls: Photographs by Bob Gruen."

About The Current Fakebook® series
The Current Fakebook series celebrates the power of the written and spoken word—authors, journalists, screenwriters, songwriters, poets and more come to the stage to share insights into their processes, their work and their vision. The series takes its name from "fakebooks," collections that contain the basic framework of songs—lyrics, melodies and chord progressions—from which musicians improvise or learn a song on the spot, and in so doing create the song afresh.

The brainchild of host Mary Lucia, the Current Fakebook series takes place at The Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, a cabaret setting where dancing and cocktails are welcome in the aisles. Past series guests include John Hodgman, Greil Marcus, John Waters, Amy Sedaris, Chuck Klosterman and Chuck D. Musical guests have often been part of the action, including The Mekons, Atmosphere, Brother Ali and Tapes 'n Tapes.
