Mankato now broadcasting Minnesota Public Radio's The Current on 95.3 FM

November 12, 2008

A new translator is broadcasting Minnesota Public Radio's The Current in Mankato on 95.3 FM.

"Mankato is the perfect audience for The Current," said Christine Cross, regional network manager. "As a university town full of smart, energetic young people, we are very excited to bring music programming geared toward them."

Wherever it's heard—on the radio, online, through an iPod or with a new iPhone application—The Current brings listeners the best authentic new music alongside music that explores roots and influences. In addition to its regular music programming, The Current features in-studio interviews and performances, music news, podcasts and events.

Programming also includes The Local Show with Chris Roberts on Sunday nights at 5 p.m., Redefinition Radio with Kevin Beacham (Saturdays at 11 p.m.), Rhythm Lab with Tarik Moody and Don Cuco (Sundays at midnight), and national shows such as American Routes® with Nick Spitzer (Sundays at 5 a.m.), and Sound Opinions with Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot (Sundays at 6 p.m.)

The Current began broadcasting in 2005 as a non-commercial, member-supported radio station based in the Twin Cities. Since then, the station has grown into a far-reaching community with members and listeners joining in from around the world at thecurrent.org.

Translators are a class of low-power FM transmitters that extend the reach and fill gaps in the service area of full-power FM stations.

Funding for the construction of the Mankato translator station was provided through a public radio grant from the State of Minnesota, which MPR dedicated to this and other capital investment projects in greater Minnesota.

Minnesota Public Radio® operates a 38-station radio network serving virtually all of Minnesota and parts of surrounding states and produces programming for radio, Internet and face-to-face audiences. Programs produced by Minnesota Public Radio's parent company, American Public Media,™ reach 15.9 million listeners nationwide each week. Of those, nearly 800,000 listen regionally, in Minnesota and surrounding states. A complete list of stations, programs and additional services can be found at www.mpr.org.
