Minnesota Public Radio News and Minnesota Council of Nonprofits (MCN) are partnering on two nonpartisan events during the week before the 2008 election. Chris Roberts of MPR News will host an informative and entertaining evening for people who are new to the election process.

Roberts will provide nonpartisan information about both U.S. Presidential candidates' positions, plus talk to some people from MPR's Public Insight Network who became American citizens and recently voted for the first time. The program will end with a discussion with the audience about their voting stories and questions. Some program material will be written in Spanish, Hmong and Somali. Voter guides in multiple languages will also be available.

One event will be in St. Paul and one in Minneapolis; both will feature the same content. Besides the programming, the audience will have access to people trained by MCN's Minnesota Participation Project, whose aim is to familiarize people with the voting process. There will be information about polling places, rides to voting locations and voter registration. MPR's Select A Candidate, an online tool that matches voters with candidates who reflect their values (now available in English and Spanish), will be available to help voters navigate candidates' positions on issues of importance to them.

The Minneapolis Foundation is sponsoring the events.

These events will be free and open to the public. No pre-registration is necessary. There will be food and live music.

The Minnesota Council of Nonprofits (MCN) is the 1,900-member statewide association of nonprofit organizations. MCN's Minnesota Participation Project is an exciting effort to support and expand the capacity of Minnesota nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations to effectively engage in permissible nonpartisan voter engagement efforts—registration, voter education and get-out-the-vote (GOTV) activities.
