Classical Minnesota Public Radio to expand broadcast of American Public Media's Performance Today® to two hours

May 15, 2008

Beginning Monday, May 19, the full two hours of American Public Media's Performance Today® will begin broadcasting weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CT on Classical Minnesota Public Radio stations throughout the region.

Performance Today, which St. Paul-based American Public Media acquired from National Public Radio in January 2007, is a two-hour weekday classical music program featuring live concert recordings from studios, festivals and concert halls across the nation and around the world, as well as classical music news, interviews and features.

"We love the idea of bringing classical music alive on the radio," said John Birge, host and program director for Classical Minnesota Public Radio. "Performance Today is an especially fitting vehicle for that—not only for its commitment to airing live performances, but in the unique way it brings to life the stories of the music and musicians as well. It's another great way we connect classical music to the lives of our listeners."

The list of concert performers and studio guests on Performance Today is a Who's Who of the classical music world, including performances by orchestras like the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, plus acclaimed soloists such as Yo Yo Ma, Gil Shaham, Midori and Itzhak Perlman, to name a few. Each Wednesday, Bruce Adolphe joins Fred Child for the Piano Puzzler, challenging a listener to identify a popular song played in the style of a composer.
