Classical music lovers statewide have an opportunity to hear soprano Dawn Upshaw with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra through two live broadcasts on Classical Minnesota Public Radio, hosted by John Birge.
On Saturday, April 5, Classical MPR will feature the SPCO and its new artistic partner, soprano Dawn Upshaw, in a performance at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts for a program inspired by cabaret, folksong, jazz and poetry. Repertoire includes Schoenberg's Cabaret Songs, Berio's Folk Songs for Voice and Orchestra and Stravinsky's Dumbarton Oaks concerto. Reinbert de Leeuw conducts.
Dawn Upshaw and the SPCO return to the MPR airwaves with conductor and SPCO artistic partner Douglas Boyd on Saturday, April 26, with a preview of the program the SPCO will perform at Carnegie Hall in May. The program features selected Schubert songs in newly commissioned arrangements for voice and chamber orchestra by Osvaldo Golijov, Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite and Haydn's Symphony No. 104 in D ("London").
"To hear a live broadcast of a performance is a unique experience," said Gayle Ober, MPR's director of classical music programming. "You are there, in the moment, with thousands of other listeners, even if you're alone in your car or your living room. Add to that world-class artists like Dawn Upshaw and the SPCO and you have something extraordinary. Live concert broadcasts are truly a way to bring great classical music to everyone."
To listen to these special live broadcasts, tune in to Classical Minnesota Public Radio stations statewide, including KSJN 99.5 FM in the Twin Cities, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 and Saturday, April 26, or online at www.mpr.org. These broadcasts are in addition to MPR's regular Monday night SPCO concert broadcasts.
