In the Loop is going political. With primary season just weeks away, the politicos and pundits are on the watch for the dreaded "flip-flop." That's when a candidate is labeled indecisive for changing a position. Should that be toxic for a politician? What about the rest of us—we want to be able to change our minds or our positions, don't we? What's the price of changing our convictions—political and personal?
Former Minnesota Congressman Tim Penny will be capping off the conversation on the rise of the term "flip-flop" in American politics. As a candidate for governor in 2002, he was trailed by a roving character called "Waffle Man" for his alleged inability to take a position. He's got some good insight into how our political climate might be affecting politicians' abilities to make reasoned policy decisions.
Along with Tim Penny, In the Loop will also be speaking with Dave Colling, former campaign manager for Keith Ellison, about how to survive a flip-flop. Reporter Julie Siple has a piece about researching flip-flops behind the scenes.
Also, the team behind MPR's popular new podcast, Grammar Grater, will do a live segment on the history and etymology of the term. And host Jeff Horwich will talk to the audience about what they think of political flip-flops and how they change their minds on issues.
