Trio Mediaeval is famed for its diverse polyphonic repertoire and pristine vocal lines. Joshua Kosman of the San Francisco Chronicle writes, "Singing doesn't get more unnervingly beautiful." The Norwegian songs to be presented in this concert complement the repertoire of sacred music and contemporary pieces that has made the group famous since they began singing together in Oslo in 1997. Though Anna Maria Friman, Linn Andrea Fuglseth and Torunn Østrem Ossum did not grow up as folk musicians, these are songs they have known since childhood.
The ensemble released its first CD, Words of the Angel, on ECM Records in October 2001. The album immediately went to The Billboard Top 10 Bestsellers list and was the April 2002 Stereophile Recording of the Month. Folk Songs is the group's fourth album. The trio has collaborated with many contemporary composers including Gavin Bryars, Ivan Moody and Bang on a Can. The group appeared on American Public Media's Saint Paul Sunday in October 2005.
Special guest Birger Mistereggen is a timpanist and percussionist with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. He is a graduate of the Norwegian Academy of Music in 1992 and from 1991 to 2001, he worked in the Norwegian Armed Forces Staff Band, playing drums and timpani. He has also played with The Norwegian Opera, the ragtime Ophelia Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Oslo Sinfonietta, the percussion trio Sisu and various jazz bands and rock groups.
