Minnesota Public Radio Continues Its Saturday Evening Jazz Tradition with New Show and Host

New jazz show with host Maryann Sullivan to debut 9 p.m.-midnight this Saturday, October 6 on Minnesota Public Radio News

October 5, 2007

(St. Paul, Minn.) October 5, 2007 — Minnesota Public Radio announced today it will debut a new jazz program, name tbd, with host Maryann Sullivan 9 p.m.-midnight this Saturday, October 6 on Minnesota Public Radio News.

The new program will succeed THE JAZZ IMAGE with Leigh Kamman —the venerable jazz program heard on Minnesota Public Radio since 1973.

"I am excited to continue the jazz tradition on Minnesota Public Radio," Sullivan said. "It is such an honor to follow the path Leigh Kamman has forged in his career and an enormous opportunity to keep jazz alive on the airwaves."

Sullivan has been a part of the Minnesota Public Radio family for 11 years, working as a host for both News and Classical, and as a voice talent for various MPR produced shows. Listeners may also recognize her as the voice of underwriting messages for the Minnesota Public Radio. Since 1996, she has hosted the jazz calendar segment on THE JAZZ IMAGE.

"We didn't have to look far to find a wonderful new host for Saturday night jazz on KNOW and our statewide news network," said Sarah Lutman, senior vice president for Content and Media. "Maryann Sullivan's talents are already known to Minnesota Public Radio's audience and we look forward to hearing her in a new place on Saturday nights. Maryann's deep relationships with the local jazz community and her talent and experience as a broadcaster make her the ideal choice for this position."

Sullivan will host jazz music 9 p.m.-midnight on all Minnesota Public Radio News stations, including KNOW 91.1 FM in the Twin Cities. 89.3 The Current will fill the timeslot formerly held by THE JAZZ IMAGE rebroadcast, Sunday evenings 11 p.m.-2 a.m., with a regular Current DJ shift.

More about Maryann Sullivan
Sullivan has been an on-air radio personality in the Twin Cities since the 1980s, beginning her jazz broadcasting career at KTWN-108 in Anoka, the first full-time jazz radio station in the Twin Cities area. She went on to broadcast jazz at several stations, including KTCJ, KTWN's "The Breeze" new-age jazz satellite radio network, and KTWN Video as a jazz video host.

During the 1990s, Sullivan began a long association with KBEM Jazz-88 FM. While at KBEM, she conceived the locally produced show, Minnesota Connection, an hour-long interview program featuring musicians from around the country with ties to Minnesota. Minnesota Connection allowed Maryann to become well acquainted with the local jazz community. This interest in local jazz musicians continues to this day.

Also during the 1990s, Sullivan co-hosted a nationally syndicated jazz program, JazzWire, which featured independently produced jazz recordings from all across the country and was produced by IGMOD records, a local jazz record label.

Sullivan currently lives in Edina with her husband, local jazz musician Doug Haining of the Twin Cities Seven and the Wolverines Classic Jazz Orchestra. She has two sons pursuing music careers.
