"Minnesota Public Radio Day in Rochester" to Bring a Day of Broadcasts and Events to Rochester on May 24

MPR News, Classical and The Current radio networks to broadcast live from the Rochester Art Center

WHERE: Rochester Art Center, 40 Civic Center Dr. SE, Rochester

WHAT: For the first-time ever, Minnesota Public Radio will bring its three regional services—News, Classical and The Current—to Rochester for a day of live broadcasts and events. Programming will highlight Rochester issues and culture, sharing the city's character with MPR's statewide and online audiences.

Set to take place at the Rochester Art Center, the day will begin with the popular news show Midmorning, hosted by Kerri Miller; in the afternoon, Steve Staruch will host three hours of Classical Minnesota Public Radio; and that evening, Mark Wheat will finish the day with a three-hour broadcast of The Current.

A noon-time lunch break will give attendees and MPR hosts a chance to meet one another. They will also be joined by Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede and members of the Rochester City Council.

9-11 a.m. Midmorning live broadcast with host Kerri Miller

Midmorning host Kerri Miller brings MPR's weekday news magazine to Rochester for a live broadcast. Guests during the 9 a.m. hour TBA. During the 10 a.m. hour, Miller will be joined by Warren MacKenzie, recognized as a true master of 20th Century ceramic art, who will discuss the retrospective of his works on exhibit at the Rochester Art Center.

Tune in: Midmorning is heard on all Minnesota Public Radio News stations, including KZSE 90.7 FM in Rochester, KNOW 91.1 FM in the Twin Cities and via live Web stream on www.mpr.org.

Noon-1 p.m. Lunch with Minnesota Public Radio hosts and Rochester City Leaders

Attendees are invited to join Minnesota Public Radio hosts for a brown bag lunch and conversation. At noon, Midmorning host Kerri Miller will welcome the audience, as well as Rochester Mayor Brede and members of the Rochester City Council. She will also be joined by Classical Minnesota Public Radio host Steve Staruch and The Current host Mark Wheat.

3-6 p.m. Classical Minnesota Public Radio live broadcast with host Steve Staruch

The day of live broadcasts resumes at 3 p.m. when Classical Minnesota Public Radio host Steve Staruch invites some of Rochester's finest musicians to join him for music and conversation. Guests during the opening hour include Jere Lantz, now in his 27th season as conductor of the Rochester Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, and a live performance by the Dolce Wind Quintet.

At 4 p.m. pianist and teacher Horacio Nuguid will play some of his favorite selections and will bring with him a quartet of students from Rochester area high schools and the University of Minnesota. This outstanding quartet, recently featured in the Rochester Young Artist Concerts, will play Mozart.

Starting at 5 p.m. guests from the Humanities in Medicine program at Mayo Clinic will discuss the relationship between music and healing and tell us a bit about their series, Harmony for Mayo. We'll round out the hour with the 40-voice Choral Arts Ensemble directed by Michael Culloton.

7-10 p.m. The Current live broadcast with host Mark Wheat

Minnesota Public Radio's new music service, The Current, will round out the day of live broadcasts with host Mark Wheat. He will be joined by regional artists for a lively cultural discussion alongside great DJ music picks.

At 7 p.m. Wheat will welcome Steven Schmidt, general manager of Down by the Riverside, to talk about the free Rochester summer concert series. Sculptor Sam Spiczka will join Wheat during the 8 p.m. hour to discuss his renowned metal sculptures and other works. Wheat's guest during the 9 p.m. hour will be award-winning freelance photographer Stephen Geffre and the Americana musical duo Jailhouse Payback.
