To the tune of: "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"
Picking out the perfect tree
everyone is filled with glee
hanging up ornaments
counting your presents
at the top of the tree
an angel is sitting so brightly
eggnog is being sipped
while the presents are being ripped
a train, a doll, a sweater
nice warm boots made of leather

Going out for a Christmas stroll
carolers standing at a pole
singing a happy song
we sing as we walk along
bundled up so tight
watching the starry night
home again and off to bed
tomorrow's floating in my head
in the morning we will rise
and to our surprise
Santa was here
we are filled with Christmas cheer

Ashley Blaine, Mallory Gemlo, Jane Wright, Erin Oeffler, Mankato, MN

To the tune of: "We Wish You a Merry Christmas"
We have no school today We have no school today
We have no school today Because it snowed last night

The snow came down at supper last night it came down in piles from the heavens above
We have no school today We have no school today
We have no school today Because it snowed last night

We went out to play to build an igloo We had a snowball fight and I got a black eye

Chad Gullickson, Mankato, MN

To the tune of: "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"
Refrain:
Click! The on-line shopping's done.
Christmas now can be more fun;
No more malls or discount stores,
No more Christmas shopping wars.
In your jammies, in your house,
With your keyboard and your mouse,
On the net, you'll find much more,
Than on shelves in any store.

Refrain

Endless lines and gridlocked aisles,
Lot's of frowns and no one smiles.
Crowded stores and bumbling clerks,
Other shoppers act like jerks.
Frazzled zombies needing rest,
Bleary-eyed and feeling stressed,
You'll slow down the hectic pace,
When you shop in cyberspace.

Refrain

Fight the traffic to the mall,
Betcha there's no parking stall.
Chase around to save a dime,
What's the value of your time?
There's no need to spin your wheels,
Surf the net, You'll find good deals.
Leave the hassles, leave the stress,
To E-Bay and UPS.

Refrain

Ken Mogren, Winona, MN

To the tune of: "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"
Hark! The retail owners sing
Glory to the old ka-ching
With spenders jammed from aisle to aisle
Wal-Mart managers all have smiles

Keep on buying, K-mart shoppers
Flash that plastic, "Shop till you Droppers"
Stores are open 24-7
It's a Holiday spending heaven

Hark! The retail owners sing
Glory to the old ka-ching!

Michael Potter, Taylors Falls, MN

To the tune of: "We Wish You a Merry Christmas"
Title: This Glorious Night

Outside, snow has finished falling.
Night birds fly the forest, calling.
The moonlight is softly shining
On landscape so pure.

The stars glow so bright
On this glorious night,
As we move toward morning
From light into light.

A glad little fire warms us.
Our loved-ones all sing in chorus
A song for the winter solstice
To welcome the dawn.

The heavens are bright
On this sacred night,
And we greet the morning
As dark shades to light.

Now firelight has turned to ember
This clear dawn in mid-December,
And we pause to well-remember
Those whom we hold dear.

Then morning dawns bright
From this glorious night.
The season turns onward
From light into light.

Deb Gunther, Mounds View, MN

To the tune of: "We Wish You a Merry Christmas"
We wish you a good economy,
We wish you a good economy,
We wish you a good economy,
And a productive year.

Black Friday helps Target and Best Buy stores too,
3M and Pentair make their profits for you.

Minnesota does agriculture and mines ore from up North,
Artic Cat and Polaris help deal with the snow.

The Mall of America, Wells Fargo our Airport MSP,
Each does what it can to help with GDP.

So think of them all in this season of cheer,
Raise a toast to each one who's stock price you hold dear.

We wish you a good economy,
We wish you a good economy,
We wish you a good economy,
And a productive year.

Mark Antonich, Hibbing, MN

To the tune of: "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"
A Midwestern Christmas
Students leave, for school is over
Now's when I can be a loafer
I am done, my work's completed
I almost feel a bit conceited
Time to relax, it feels so freeing
My brain's already atrophying
Christmas fills me with such glee,
It's a Midwest jubilee!

Refrain:
Hark! It's Holiday Vacation,
Joy, Bliss, Rapture, Jubilation!

But wait, where have my friends all gone?
Why, they'd flown away at dawn
To Cancun, or Cozumel
Away from the Midwestern chill
We exchange gifts, philanthropic
While they languish in the tropics
Snow falls gently to the ground
Making not a single sound

Refrain

They fly back by New Year's Eve
Back from their winter reprieve
All look to me, faces shrouded
"Our resort was way too crowded,"
"People running everywhere,
Never a breath of fresh air,"
Such frustration they did exude
I treasured my Midwest solitude

Refrain

Peter Severson, Sioux Falls, SD

To the tune of: "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"
Help! The weary shopper sighs,
the holidays could make me cry;

Store to store through slush and snow,
where is Barney and GI Joe?
Fur-lined socks and veg-o-matics,
sales pitches so dramatic.
Finding just the perfect gift,
would give my spirits a needed lift.
But when I see the big price tag,
then buy spirits start to sag.

Help! The weary shopper sighs,
the holidays could make me cry.

My cash is low, my card is maxed,
thanks to all the sales tax.
Then as I'm about to scoff,
I find some bargains for half off!
So they'll have their Harry Potter,
Barbie, Elmo and fish in water,
And my heart is overjoyed,
for profit margins I have buoyed.
Warm satisfaction I have earned,
'til my gifts are all returned.

Help! The weary shopper sighs,
the holidays could make me cry.

Louis DiSanto, St. Paul, MN

To the tune of: "We Wish You a Merry Christmas"
We wish you a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas-
but Jane, fix your hair.

Good tidings we'll bring to all of our kin.
With this family photo, so Jane fix your hair.

And please fold your hands there neatly
And smile just oh so sweetly
Our annual Yule entreaty?
and Jane, fix your hair.

How can we persuade you to sit in this chair?
And what if we paid you to Jane fix your hair?

We're not getting any traction.
You're driving us to distraction.
We really could use some action,
so Jane fix your hair.

Try looking serene, though I know you don't care.
And this time I really mean it: Now Jane, FIX YOUR HAIR.

We wish you would just get on the ball!
We wish you'd shape up! But most of all

We wish you a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year.

Eric Witte, Woodbury, MN

To the tune of: "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"
"Hark! The Postal Worker Comes"

Refrain:
Hark! The postal worker comes
Bringing cards and packages.

Christmas letters sent each year
Sharing news to bring good cheer.
Presents sent from far away
To your door now neatly stay
Waiting to be brought inside
Filled with holiday surprise.

Refrain

Sealed with love and wishes for
Peace on earth - most cards implore.
Happiness to all is sought
In the cards, the carrier brought.
Pictures of folks you rarely see -
Pictures of friends and family -
Decorate your home and hearth
Giving you a happy heart.

Refrain

Get the scissors! Open the box!
It could be a pair of socks!
But you know you shouldn't peak
You don't want to be a sneak.
Find the gifts in bubble wrapping.
Have some fun with all your snapping
Put the gifts right under the tree
Then let out a shout of glee.

Refrain

Sue Stevens, Virginia, MN

To the tune of: "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"
Verse 1
I moved here in mid-July
Underneath a clear blue sky
Bird and flowers every-where
BIG mosquitoes in the air

Chorus
I moved here from Ca-li-for-nia
My friends all tell me, we-warned-ya
That stuff on the ground is snow
Now I'm required, to shovel and blow
Mark my words my friends all sing,
You'll be mov-ing back by Spring

Verse 2
Ice and snow, and salt and sa-and
Now have covered all the land
My Dutch elm has an orange ri-ng
It is coming down by Spring

Chorus
I moved here from Ca-li-for-nia
My friends all tell me "we warned ya"
Tra-ded smog and a long commute
For a big coat, and winter boots
Mark my words my friends all sing,
You'll be mov-ing back by Spring

Susan McPherson, Minneapolis, MN

To the tune of: "We Wish You a Merry Christmas"
I hope for a big present
I hope for a big present
I hope for a big present
because I deserve it.

Refrain:
Christmas is about big presents, big presents for me and everyone here.

It is not about Christ's birth
it is not about Christ's birth
it is not about Christ's birth
because people forget.
Refrain

We should all remember, as much as we can
