After the Fair

Words by Anton Giff
Music by Eduard Holst

We've all gone wild about the Fair,
'Tis such a lovely sight;
Such crowds of people travel there,
With accent of delight.

Chicago is a splendid spot
You hear them all declare,
Unhappy is our earthly lot
Until we've done the Fair.

But after the Fair if over,
After the crown departs,
How we have spent our money,
That will just break our hearts!

Quarter a drop for water,
Dollar to breathe the air!
How we will kick ourselves boys,
After the Fair.

We mingle in the dizzying throng
And fling about our cash;
For if we've got our girls along,
We always to things rash,

Of course we like to put on style
And ask them in to dine;
We pay the check, too, with a smile,
And have a royal time.

But after the Fair is over,
How we would like to frame
That little check they gave us,
Just to preserve the same?

Many will wear their dusters
In the next Winter's air!
Many will dine on snowballs
After the Fair!

We gaze upon the dancing girls
From ev'ry foreign part;
Oh how we do admire their curls
And eyes of ev'ry sort!

The music and the warbling gay
The heart delight and thrill
The longer we among them stay
The longer is the bill.

Oh, after the Fair is over
Won't it be bliss to think
How we were "cooped" in garrets
Never to sleep a wink!

How up on pegs they hung us,
When they'd no beds to spare,
Couldn't we choke those landlords
After the Fair!

We sail upon the crystal lake,
We have sweet moonlit walks;
Our girls and wives around we take,
And have romantic talks.

We find our "little pile" grow less,
But that's no matter now;
Pure happiness we all express
Upon each placid brow.

But, after the Fair is over,
Many will "foot" it home,
Counting the "ties" before them,
While o'er the tracks they roam!

Many for sweet Chicago
Fondly will breathe a prayer!
Thinking what "chumps" they've been, boys,
After the Fair!
